Electrical Systems

Main switch is located in the walk-thru.  “Strider” has two engine-driven alternators, three solar panels, a wind generator on the mizzen mast, a Honda inverter/generator, and 120v and 220v portable battery chargers.  The Honda generator has its own storage box on the aft deck.  Typically the solar panels and wind generator provide all power at anchor.  We have been at anchor in one spot for 2 weeks without ever needing to run either the engine or the Honda generator.

When cruising, the 220v inverter runs the fridge which we run 1.5 to 2 hours per day.  The refrigerator has a seawater cooled condensor with two holding plates and is very efficient.  The refrigerator can also be powered by the Honda generator or 220v shore power.

There are voltage regulators and voltage meters for each solar panel and the wind generator.

LED lights are used for navigation lights and several interior lights.

Sails & Rigging

The sails are all in good condition with the exception of the staysail, which is fair.  The genoa is appoximately 150%, and is very good at moving this boat in lighter airs.  The rigging is regularly inspected and has no obvious defects.  We have recently crossed the Indian and South Atlantic Oceans without issues.  The rigging is, however, over 15 years old, and probably should be replaced at some point.  All standing rigging has Staylock fittings, so replacement is relatively easy.  The mainmast has folding mast-steps to facilitate rigging inspection or replacement.  Both masts are on tabernacles/stepped on deck.

The mizzen mast, its rigging and sail, and the mainmast backstays were replaced in Oct. 2002, after the mast was clipped by the wing of a floatplane.  Long story-this happened to the previous owners in the Whitsundays in Australia.

The mainmast has 2 backstays.  It also has running backstays connected at the second spreaders, which we use in strong winds.

Deck Equipment

All deck equipment is in used but servicable condition.  The Aquapro RIB dinghy is about 11 years old.  It has an aluminum bottom and hypalon tubes.  It is in good shape, and is always covered when not in use.

The windlass has been very reliable.  It was disassembled, inspected, cleaned, and reassembled in Nov. 2013.

Mechanical Systems

The engine is original, but has proven extremely reliable.  It is a 2-cycle engine.  This is a little unusual these days, but all parts are readily available due to the large number of these engines still in service.   I have used Diesel Pro Power in Miami for spare parts with very good results.  They have a huge inventory and a great website which shows all parts for this engine.

The engine starts instantly and does not smoke.  There is some minor oil seepage in a few areas.  In 150 hours of motoring it typically uses/loses about 1 quart of oil.  I use 40wt single grade oil as per manufacturer recommendation and faithfully change it and the filter at least every 150 hours.

The top end of the engine was rebuilt in 1991 and the transmission was rebuilt in 2011.

The mechanically-driven tachometer is inaccurate, even though I have replaced it, thus I can’t give an accurate figure for engine hours.

The Windpilot steering gear has its own rudder that steers the boat with the main wheel locked.  It handles “Strider” well in all but the lightest winds.

Our hydraulic autopilot also does a good job steering while motoring or sailing.  The hydraulic ram is connected directly to the steering quadrant.
