The Red Herring is a USCG registered 40′ J. Simpson Felicity, cutter rigged pilothouse steel boat. She has less than 6′ draft and 6’4″ headroom. She has a double chine steel hull, modified fin keel, and skeg-mounted rudder. This custom boat ‘Felicity’ was designed by J. Simpson, a metal boat designer of the year award winner. Three boats of this design were built. The other two have circumnavigated. This means you are getting a proven bluewater capable boat without the miles and related wear and tear.

The current owners have focused on preparation and maintenance. They pass this on to you with necessary tools, numerous spares, lots of offshore gear including a Hydrovane windvane and hydraulic autopilot. There are builder’s manual and most equipment manuals organized alphabetically in folders. The most recent survey was done in October 2017 and the boat has gone through two on the hard refits in December of 2017 and in April of 2018.

This is one amazing boat. Not just the design and construction by the original owner, who was an electrical engineer, but down to the very meticulous maintenance by the current owners. This truly is one of the nicest boats I have seen. I don’t use the term turnkey very often, but it sure applies to this yacht. Be sure to click on full specs to see all she has to offer.

Located in the heart of one of the world’s most renowned cruising grounds. La Paz, Mexico, the gateway to the Sea of Cortez. Dozens of perfect postcard anchorages with white sandy beaches and crystal clear warm inviting waters. Spend the days swimming, diving, snorkeling in what Jacques Cousteau once described as the worlds largest natural aquarium, or just lounge on the next anchorage on your boat!

Owner’s comments

As owners we focused on preparation and maintenance. We pass this on to you with necessary tools, numerous spares, lots of offshore gear including a Hydrovane windvane and hydraulic autopilot, and the sundries often hard to find in Mexico. We have a builder’s manual and most equipment manuals organized alphabetically in folders. The most recent survey was done in October 2017 and the boat has gone through two on the hard refits in December of 2017 and in April of 2018.

The Red Herring has proved herself in the cold winters of the Pacific Northwest up to Alaska and in the tropical climates south of the Tropic of Cancer. She is currently in the Sea of Cortez ready for the 2018-2019 cruising season and an April run west to the Marquesas or south to South America. With the quality of the maintenance and the amount of gear, there is no place in the world this boat cannot go.

Accommodations

  • The pilothouse has hydraulic steering and autopilot with full navigation station, dinette, hanging locker, chart table, and quarter berth. The pilothouse can be closed off from the other cabins. • Down the pilothouse is galley to port and settee to starboard. Fwd head and V-berth
  • High density foam insulation throughout
  • Wicker locker fronts for ventilation
  • This is an extremely dry boat. No need to peel labels off your canned goods
